NexSys Water Strand researchers showcase their work with Primary School students
At the end of November 2025, (opens in a new window)NexSys PhD researchers (opens in a new window)Haresh Dash and (opens in a new window)Milad Rajaei visited The Good Shepherd National School in Dublin, where they engaged with 5th and 6th class students about their research on water and wastewater. During their session, they explained the journey of water after domestic use, detailing how it is collected from toilets, kitchens, and wash basins, and then transported through infrastructure for treatment. They further discussed the processes involved in treating wastewater as well as the purification of seawater and other sources before it is supplied as safe drinking water to households.

What stood out most for Haresh and Milad "was the students’ curiosity and unbiased thinking. Their questions approached problems from every angle, reminding them important it is to keep the same openness and lack of bias for any research". Haresh said he was "also genuinely impressed when some students confidently used technical terms such as sewerage network and wastewater treatment plant, explaining that they had picked this up from their own reading outside the classroom".

The school students were provided with booklets designed to help them further explore the topics of water, wastewater, and energy, and many students expressed interest in contributing to clean water initiatives in the future.

Haresh and Milad thanked Lorna Byrne (NexSys Education & Public Engagement Officer) for organising this school visit and(opens in a new window)NexSysfor the opportunity to share their work which will hopefully inspire the next generation of water sector professionals!
